Class Goals:
To give an introduction into geometry and geometry related concepts like area, volume, proofs, line relationships and others.
To prepare students for the State Math Assessment.
To prepare students for later academic pursuits.
Class rules: This class will follow the L.A.D.D.S. guideline set by the Board of Education listed in your student handbook. However, there are some other rules for my classroom that I want to add.
Come to class prepared every day. This includes paper, pencil/pen, text book, and homework from the day before.
There is to be no food or drink allowed in my classroom. The only exception is I will allow you to have water in a bottle in my class.
There is to be no cell phone in my class. That is ringing, send text messages and/or simply out. The first time I will ask you to turn it off and after that, I will hand out a detention or have you talk to the principal about it.
Unless there is some sort of medical concern, students will not be allowed to leave the classroom everyday. If a student is allowed to leave you will need to sign out and may be asked to leave your phone on the teacher’s desk. I am going to put a limit of five times that a student may leave the classroom and any times after that, it will be required for a student to make up that time missed in class.
Grades: Your grade will be based on four main areas: Assignments, quizzes, tests and the final exam. Due the nature of a math class, we will have an assignment almost everyday in here. All assignments will be due the next day and checked for completion. Assignment not finish in class will be expected to be completed at home. All assignments must be 100% complete to receive credit. If an assignment is not done on time or not complete, then it will be considered late. All late homework is only worth 50% of the original value and is due one week after that due date. After one week, missing homework will not be accepted for credit, as per the schools homework policy. Upon checking the homework, we will go over the answers and I will give the students a chance to ask questions over the homework. Also, I will try to give students about 15 minutes everyday, on the average, to work on the assignments in class. Homework is worth 25% of your class grade.
The quizzes are the next 25% of your grade. All quizzes are five questions long and what I call mastery quizzes. When I say “mastery” this means that you must get at least an 80% on the quiz or you will retake it until you do. I use quizzes to help me know how well the students understanding the concepts. There are two deadlines on quizzes. The first is to earn a 100% on a quiz; it must be retaken by that chapter test. After the chapter test, quizzes can still be made up, but only for an 80% until the end of the semester. Quiz retakes can be done during homework time and before school.
At the end of every chapter, there will be a chapter test to truly see the students understanding of the material. A half-sheet of notebook paper cheat sheet will be allowed on almost every test. Occasionally, we will have a mastery test over a particularly important concept. These will be treated like the quizzes. A student’s score on the quiz will need 80% or better on these tests. Tests will be worth 50% of grade.
Each Semester we will have a comprehensive final. The final is worth 10% of the overall grade.
I have some concerns that should be mentioned at this time. I will allow students to use calculators in this class. I am available in my room by 7:45 a.m. before school if you need help and during my planning period if you have any questions. Also, I will personally try to talk to every student within every two to three weeks about their grade. Finally, in my classes, I feel that D’s and F’s are not acceptable grades. So, if your grade does fall into the D or F range when I update grades, then I will contact the parents about ways to improve your grade. Any questions please let me know.
