First Math Unit - Place Value

by Laurie Middendorf

August 15, 2008

Our first math unit will cover place value skills.  The children will be working with numbers in the hundred thousands.  We will work on determining the value of digits, reading and writing large numbers, and comparing large numbers.  You will see various practice opportunities with these skills in your child's daily homework which support our classroom lessons.  The place value unit is an important foundation for the regrouping unit on addition and subtraction.

Here are a few important terms that you will see in your child's daily work.

Standard Form:  345

Expanded Form:  300+40+5

Written Form:  three hundred forty-five
