Jefferson West FFA has had a busy month for April and the first week of May. April 7 started the frenzy with Superday competitions at Rock Creek High School. Ag Sales, Ag Communication, Job Interview and Poultry teams competed with several individual top ten rankings. Team and top ten individual results are as follows: Job Interview individuals- Sierra Lillie in 3rd and Tabatha Bell in 4th, Ag Communications- Tabatha Bell was 1st and Sierra Lillie was 10th. Ag Sales team finished in 6th place over all and the Poultry team finished 6th overall with Logan Shenk in 10th and Adam Becker in 11th. Livestock Judgers competed in Tonganoxie on the 21st with the novice team bringing home 8th place.
Members then performed a quick turnaround and headed to Sabetha for district banquet on the 26th. Daniel Sayles ran for district office but was unsuccessful in his quest. The chapter received the Superior National Chapter Award which qualifies them to compete in the National Chapter Award Program at the state level.
The last day of April concluded with the 15th Annual Jefferson County Ag Day being held at the Threshing Bee grounds on the 30th. It was a damp start for the morning groups but turned out to be a beautiful afternoon for those attending later in the day. Just over 100 elementary students from Jefferson County took part in the educational activity to promote agriculture awareness.
The end of the four week marathon was the State Competitions in Manhattan on May 2-4. Ag Sales team finished in a very commendable 14th place with team members, Sierra Lillie, Hunter Rouse, Nick Tafanelli and Jarek VanPetten. The poultry team of Adam Becker, Erick Jernberg, Daniel Sayles and Logan Shenk finished in 18th place and the Dairy Cattle Team of Adam Becker, Sierra Lillie, Daniel Sayles and Steven Vaught competed to a 15th place finish. These were all solid performances with the bulk of team members returning for competition next year.
