Central Office: Curriculum and Instruction

Toward Excellence

by Mary Getto

September 20, 2008

Each spring our students take the Kansas State Assessments. This is the measuring stick required by the massive federal “No Child Left Behind” legislation. All the students in the United States are to be proficient in reading and mathematics by the year 2014. Official reports will be out soon, and we will publish directions for accessing the Kansas State Department of Education website when those reports become available. Below is a preview of how our students as a whole performed on all 2008 assessments.

Your teachers do such a wonderful job of focusing on those essential skills determined by the state to be most important at each grade level. Their belief that every child can learn is evident in the care they show each day and their emphasis on developing lessons to reach all the students. Learning is taking place up and down every hallway in your schools. The children are very proud of their growth and of the scores shown here.

Academic success depends on all of us doing our part. The bus drivers who greet the students each day, the custodians and maintenance staff who keep our facilities clean and safe, the cooks who provide nutritious meals, support staff who provide additional learning opportunities, your administrators who make learning a priority, and members of the Board of Education who support our efforts all play a part in the academic success of Jefferson West students. We also appreciate the support of parents who entrust us with the education of their precious children and the patrons who know that an education is vital to the community’s continued growth and success. To all we say, “Thank you, and congratulations!” for your part in our continued progress toward excellence.
