About me:
Hello, my name is Peris Wanjiku. If my name looks strange and unfamiliar, it’s because it is unfamiliar. Wanjiku is a Kenyan name, most specifically a Kikuyu name which is a tribe in Kenya. I was born and raised in Nairobi, the Capital City of Kenya. The Republic of Kenya is a country in East Africa. It lies on the equator with the Indian Ocean to its southeast and Lake Victoria situated to its southwest. I have three older sisters, which made for a very interesting household. In fifth grade, I attended an all girls Catholic boarding school in Embu, Kenya called St. Ursula Girls Boarding Primary School. Boarding School sounded scary, but it turned out to be one of my best childhood experiences. Embu is located close to Mt. Kenya, which is the highest mountain in Kenya and the second-highest in Africa. My favorite memories are of hiking up Mt. Kenya Forest, or the base of Mt. Kenya on the weekend.
My family moved to America when I was in 8th grade. I attended Wichita North High School. North High is full of culture and tradition. I had a different yet rich experience that I greatly appreciated. I loved being involved in the different clubs and sports, meeting people from diverse backgrounds, and learning from different teachers.
After High School, I attended the University of Kansas for my undergraduate degree and Pittsburg State University for my Masters degree in Teaching. I also begun volunteering at Grace Evangelical Presbyterian Church. My experience as a youth leader combined with my yearning to continually learn and grow is what inspired me to pursue a career in Education.
