The seventh grade Science class has been creating models of plant and animal cells.  In their unit of Cell Processes and Energy the students have learned the names of the cell organelles and the function each one carries out for the cell.  They worked with a partner to create a 3-D model of a cell out of any material they chose to use.  After making the model they had to present it to the class and explain what each part of their model represented.  A good number of groups attempted to make their models out of some type of food!  The students proved to be very creative in making their models, no matter what material they used.  Feel free to ask your seventh grade student if they can name the cell organelles and what each one does.

The eighth grade Science class is also making models.  Their task is to create a 3-D model out of any material they want to work with, that will show Earth’s surface features as well as a cutaway view of the Earth’s interior.  They must build their model showing the interior of the Earth to scale, and show such actions as sea-floor spreading, the subduction of Earth’s lithosphere, and how the plates that our crust is made of are affected by the Earth’s interior.  They must label their model accurately and present it to the class in a creative way.  This activity is the beginning of a unit the students are studying about plate tectonics, earthquakes, and volcanoes.  At the conclusion of the unit the students should be able to share with you how the Earth’s lithosphere and its interior are related, and how and where volcanoes and earthquakes occur.
