Thermometer

We used the excessive heat this week to study how different colors and materials absorb heat differently. Mrs. Hisey brought her infrared thermometer and 3rd grade conducted a fun experiment.

At 7:30 am we place a piece of cardboard with a 3 sheets of construction paper taped to it. One white, one red, one black. The students made predictions throughout the day on how the temperatures would change based on the new actual air temperature.

Here are the results:

8:20 am   ACTUAL AIR TEMP: 89
White: 82.1       Red: 86.9          Black: 96.8
Grass: 84.5         Turf: 92.6

11:20 am.  ACTUAL AIR TEMP: 100
White: 106.7         Red 125.6        Black 158.6
Grass: 109.4        Turf: 147.2

2:20 pm    ACTUAL AIR TEMP: 106
White: 118.4         Red: 133.1      Black: 168.2
Grass: 115         Turf: 161
