Students in College English performed a “literary tug of war” in Mrs. Sage’s class. After reading an essay, they formed teams to locate text evidence and create source citations to support their arguments. Both MLA citations and source validity were assessed in this activity that required analysis, collaboration, technology, research, and the ability to respectfully disagree with opposing views. Seniors Kennedy Meredith and Tait Seymour held the “rope” as it pulled both ways over the line. Other students represented their teams as debaters.

Mr. Spangler joined three of our Culinary Essentials classes to teach them about cookie cad and how to design their own cookie cutter to be created by the schools 3D printers. He was very inspiring! He also shared some of them made by District School Nurse Kelsey Miller. They will observe the cookie cutters being created on the 3D printer from the designs made in class. After Thanksgiving break, sugar cookies using them before baking and icing. The building smells so good!!

Mrs. Becker's Spanish 3 students learned about "El Desfile del Yipao" from Colombia. It's a Jeep, "yip" parade and competition held in Colombia. Students made their own "yip" with a unique "yipao" (cargo that it carries). You can currently see el desfile (parade) on display in the High School Library. After learning about Day of the Dead and taking a field trip to see ofrendas. Spanish 4 students created their own ofrenda to honor special people in their lives.

On Friday, November 8th, seven Jefferson West art students attended Washburn Art Day along with 140 other students across the state to participate in workshops and compete in competitions. We are proud to announce that two Jefferson West students were the recipients of 3 out of 28 awards given at Washburn Art Day. To receive any award at Washburn Art Day is a treat because the competition combines big and small schools throughout Kansas and does not divide awards by the size of school. Our seven participants were Olivia Meyer, Ben Powell, Abby Smith, Ashley Moser, Corbin Mayer, Sequoia Pulsipher, and Taylor Reynolds. All seven students represented our school well throughout the day. Our winners for the day were as follows: Abby Smith – 2nd place – Drawing & Painting; Taylor Reynolds – 2nd place – Photography; and Abby Smith- 2nd place overall in the competition. From Mrs. Conley, Jefferson West Blood Drive Coordinator… Thank you for everything you did today – from donating blood to allowing students to miss class throughout the day to help out and donate themselves. We collected 46 units of blood as a community, and I was encouraged each time I stopped by the gym to see such a variety of people donating. These combined efforts make our community stronger!
