On Thursday, Mrs. Fleming's Public Speaking class We had a surprisingly fun class period. Earlier in the week the students were given a quick survey to get a feel for why they were actually taking the course. No shocker...the top answer was that this felt less anxiety-inducing than speaking in front of a lecture hall full of strangers.
The second most common response...they genuinely want to become better face-to-face communicators.
Enter: Speed Dating (no real dating involved)
Students rotated through a series of short “dates,” each lasting 90 seconds per turn. Armed with a list of prompts, they practiced eye contact, asked clarifying questions, and paid close attention to nonverbal cues...all with the goal of having intentional, meaningful communication in a very short window of time.
It was loud. It was chaotic. And it was incredibly eye-opening, for all!

I’m super honored to be selected to represent Jefferson West High School in the 2026 Kansas Shrine Bowl. Being only the fourth athlete in school history to play in this game means a lot to me, and I’m proud to represent my school and our Tiger community.
This opportunity is about more than football. The Kansas Shrine Bowl supports Shriners Children’s Hospital, and this cause is really special to my family. My great grandpa, Marvin Sedlacek, was a Shriner with the Arab Shrine Center in Topeka, and he spent a lot of time driving kids to Shriners Children’s Hospital in St. Louis so they could get the care they needed. Getting the chance to be part of this game also feels like a way for me to honor his legacy.
As part of playing in the Shrine Bowl, I’m helping raise money for Shriners Children’s Hospital. If you’re able to donate, I’d really appreciate the support as I work toward my goal of raising $2,000 to help kids who are going through really tough medical situations get the care they need.
